Thenpa Penshu (Four Best Friends)
This thangka depicts a beloved traditional Tibetan folk story. One summer day four animals who had been living under a majestic old tree met and began to argue. Elephant said, "The tree is mine because I have lived here the longest since when I came the tree was only as tall as my body."
Monkey said, No, I was here first and the tree is mine, because when I came the tree was only as tall as my body."
Rabbit said, "Sorry elephant and monkey but the tree is actually mine because when I came first the tree was only as tall as me."
Bird said, "You are all wrong, there was no tree when I came. I was here eating some seeds and one fell to the earth and grew up to become this tree."
All four animals recognized the wisdom of bird and respect from young to old was born. These four different animals became best friends and lived peacefully as one family under the old tree where they shared the shade and the fruit together.
