Evanston Connection Raising Money to Rebuild School, Lives
An earthquake reported at a magnitude of 6.9 hit Yushu county high in the Himalayas of Eastern Tibet on the morning of April 14th. The powerful quake killed more than 2,200 people, injured 12,000 and left many buried under debris or homeless. Tibet Girls School was completely destroyed.
While many lost lives and loved ones in this disaster, we eventually learned that ALL our students have survived. The priority now is to raise money to help care for our students and rebuild our school.

TO CONNECT US WITH OTHER FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
We are expanding our efforts to connect with foundations and other resources to help us rebuild and provide education to more girls. If you know of any foundations, grant opportunities or other resources to help us in this rebuilding effort, please call Nancy Floy at 847.491.1122 x11 or click here to email.
The school’s board of directors will be putting all of their efforts toward helping the surviving students and rebuilding the school. Nancy and Asang are working with the consulate officials in Chicago. They are making arrangements to travel to the area to personally deliver and oversee the distribution of funds raised along with Lopen Tsewang, the school's director, who we have learned survived the earthquake.
About the Tibet Girls School
Home to Nomad yak herding and farming families, the remote mountainous region surrounding Yushu is where Asang calls home. Asang escaped from Tibet shortly after his sister and her baby died during delivery. Along with his wife, Nancy Floy, the school was meant to honor his sister and all the women at risk by offering the key to health and opportunity: education.
Tibetan women in this area—also called the Nangchen region—typically have as many as six to 10 children, yet the region has one of the highest mortality rates for infants and mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. Education is the key to health and opportunity.
Recipient of the 2010 Women and Engaged Buddhism Award, the Tibet Girls School for girls ages 14 to 20 was opened in 2008 to help Nomad yak herding families provide more opportunities for the next generation. Teachers provide healthcare information, especially the use of birth control. The students are taught sewing, weaving and other handicrafts, as well as business and computer skills. The girls cook for themselves as they learn Chinese, math, reading and writing in the Tibetan language. All donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. The Tibet Girls School is a program of the Tsogyaling Meditation Center of Evanston.

Your contribution can help us rebuild our school.
This video was created just four days after the earthquake. Asang continues to wait for his visa, but he and Nancy were able to get initial donations of $5,000 to Yushu for the girls and their families to get medical supplies and food, as well as make burial arrangements for family members. The rest of the money raised will first set up the temporary school in Nanchen, then toward rebuilding Tibet Girls School.
