Tibet Girls SchoolTibetan women in the Nangchen region — who typically have 6 to 10 children — have one of the highest mortality rates (for infants and mothers) during pregnancy and childbirth. The Tibet Girls School, a vocational boarding school for girls ages 14 to 20, was created to help Nomad yak herding families provide more opportunities for the next generation. Working with permission of the Chinese government, the Tibet Girls School needs $11,000 per year to cover room, food, clothing and education for ten girls in the city of Yushu. It takes only $1,100 per year ( about $100 per month or $3.00 per day) to clothe, feed, educate and job train one girl. Teachers provide healthcare information, especially the use of birth control. We teach sewing, weaving and other handicrafts, as well as business and computer skills. The girls cook for themselves as they learn Chinese, English, math, reading and writing. The school is a project of the Tsogyaling Meditation Center founded in 2008. Rebuilding Efforts UnderwayAn earthquake reported at a magnitude of 6.9 hit Yushu county high in the Himalayas of Eastern Tibet on the morning of April 14, 2010. The powerful quake killed more than 2,200 people, injured 12,000 and left many buried under debris or homeless. A temporary school was set up immediately after the earthquake in one of the Government issued tents. We continued our teaching and training and in the Spring of 2011 our first three-year class graduated. We are very proud to report that two of our students have been accepted at a local government school to continue their education and others have secured jobs which will help to support their families. All of our students have stated that they plan to have fewer children than is customary and will see that their children are educated. Congratulations to our class of 2011! The City of Yushu continues to work on rebuilding and the Tibet Girls School is preparing for its next class to begin in the fall of 2011. The board of directors is currently researching the best location to rebuild the school and exploring possible partnerships with other like-minded organizations. Gratitude We are so grateful to our many generous supporters and wish you to know that you are making a difference in the lives of our girls. Our first class arrived out of the mountains, illiterate and now they can read and write Tibetan and Chinese and are computer literate as well.
